Why Parents Choose BJJ Over Karate & Taekwondo

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has no striking — kids learn to control a situation, not to hit. That makes it one of the safest martial arts for children and the most practical: skills are tested against fully resisting partners, so the confidence kids build is real, not choreographed. If you're comparing options, our coaches wrote an honest breakdown in Jiu-Jitsu vs. Karate: which is right for your child? and Kids BJJ vs. other martial arts. New to belts and ranks? Parent Questions

What age can my child start martial arts at Winners?

Age 3. Our Tiny Champs program (ages 3–4) is a gentle, play-based introduction; structured classes start at 5, and every age band from 3 to 13 has its own program and coaches.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or karate better for my child?

BJJ is grappling-based — no striking — which makes it one of the safest martial arts for kids while still being the most practical for real situations like bullying. Karate and taekwondo build great discipline too, but progress is measured in forms; in BJJ, kids learn skills they can actually use under full resistance, safely.

Do kids from North Miami Beach and Aventura train at Winners?

Yes — most of our families come from Sunny Isles Beach, North Miami Beach, Aventura, Bal Harbour, and Miami Beach. We are at 17100 Collins Ave, about 10 minutes from North Miami Beach via the 163rd Street Causeway and 8 minutes from Aventura Mall.

Will martial arts help my child with bullying?

It's the #1 reason parents enroll. BJJ teaches kids to stay calm under pressure and control a situation without throwing a punch — and the confidence that comes from practiced skill makes them far less likely to be targeted in the first place.

How much do kids martial arts classes cost?

Memberships are month-to-month with no long-term contracts, and sibling discounts are available. The first class is free — book a trial and we will walk you through the options that fit your schedule.

Is it safe? Who teaches the kids classes?

Kids classes are fully supervised, age-grouped, and led by our coaching staff under head coach Jonatas Gurgel, a 2x IBJJF World Cup Champion who has run our kids program since 2012. There is no striking in kids BJJ classes and no live sparring until kids are ready.
